Summary
Song Archaeology is a local-first Chrome extension published by Irelco Ltd for capturing songs from radio webpages into private playlists. It has no advertising or analytics and does not send a user’s library to Song Archaeology servers.
Data handled
Website content and browsing context
While the side panel is open or manually refreshed, the extension reads the active page’s displayed song title, artist, station, artwork URL and page URL. This is used only to show the proposed capture and is stored only after the user presses the save button.
User-generated collection
Saved tracks, playlists, private notes, capture/update/archive timestamps, source links, optional research and sync status are stored in Chrome’s local extension storage on the user’s device.
Authentication information
If the user enables Notion, the installation access token is encrypted locally with AES-GCM using a key derived from the user’s passphrase. The passphrase is not stored. The decrypted token is held only in Chrome session storage and is cleared when Chrome closes or the user locks the vault.
External services
Wikimedia: after the user presses “Unearth this song”, the title and artist are sent to Wikipedia and Wikidata to retrieve sourced information. Notion: after the user connects Notion and saves to a mapped playlist, the selected capture is sent directly to the Notion API over HTTPS. Support email: after the user presses “Notify developer”, the extension opens a draft in the user’s email handler containing the current page title and URL. The extension does not send it; the developer receives it only if the user reviews and sends the email. No other third party receives the library from the extension.
Purpose and limited use
Data is handled solely to provide the extension’s single purpose: capturing, organising, researching on request, exporting and optionally synchronising radio-song discoveries. Data is not sold, used for advertising, used to determine creditworthiness, or transferred for unrelated purposes.
Retention and deletion
Local captures remain until the user permanently removes an individual record, removes the extension, or clears its storage. Archiving is reversible and does not delete a record. Exported files remain wherever the user saves them. Notion data is retained according to the user’s Notion workspace settings. Removing the Notion connection from the extension deletes the encrypted local token and parent-page setting but does not delete any Notion pages or local captures.
User choices
Users can work entirely locally, edit or archive records, permanently remove individual captures after confirmation, skip research, leave Notion disconnected, export a full JSON backup, lock or remove the Notion token, and remove the extension’s local data through Chrome.
Security
All external requests use HTTPS. The extension contains no remotely hosted executable code. No security measure is absolute; users should protect their Chrome profile and choose a strong, unique vault passphrase.
